New Courses are Added to the Schedule at Knox County By: Grace O’Neal Knox County High School is offering many new classes this year. Some of the new classes include: Greenhouse taught by Ms. Mallett, the Ag teacher, Hospitality being taught by the business teacher, Mrs. Wriedt, and App Development taught by Mrs. Lucas, the high school art teacher. Another new class is being taught by Ms. McNabb, one of the high school math teachers. McNabb will teach Foundations of Education during the spring semester. According to high school counselor Mrs. O’Haver, the new classes were added to the schedule this year in order to offer students a wider variety of options for their schedules. The new classes have been a big hit with students, and many of the classes are full or have several in the class. According to Lucas, App Development consists of teaching students to code using Xcode and Swift. Xcode and Swift are programs on the computer that allow students to code. Coding is the computer language used to create the programs which are used on all forms of technology. Eventually, the students will learn how to make their own apps. Her goals for the year would be for students to brainstorm ideas for apps and to be able to execute their ideas. When asked where she sees the students' skills being by the end of the year, Lucas said, “I see them being able to independently come up with simple app ideas and being able to create them and export them.” Students will also participate in the Art Show at the end of the year to highlight their work in coding to the community. The new Hospitality course will consist of learning about the hospitality industry and the vast variety of opportunities that are available in the industry. Some opportunities include working in or running restaurants and hotels. The class will also provide students with ideas about career options that do not necessarily require going to college. According to Wriedt, hospitality is the second highest employer in the United States behind the government. Students will learn the basics of safe food preparation, food safety and sanitation, along with cooking. In the spring, the class hopes to provide the community with a served meal that students will prepare themselves. Wriedt says she has three goals for her students; one: learn and understand the opportunities available, two: learn the basics of food safety, and three: interact with the community. For Mallett, Greenhouse consists of teaching students to care for plants, but also the history of greenhouses and plant basics. Mallett wants students to learn how to care for a variety of plants throughout the school year. Students in the class are currently growing poinsettias, which will be ready to harvest after Thanksgiving. When the poinsettias are ready, students will begin to sell them. Mallett is not quite sure as to what students will be growing in the spring, but she hopes to have a greenhouse full of plants that students care for and can sell to the community. Mallett said her plans are to run the class almost like a business and plans to have students gain business skills along with gaining plant science skills. Knox County is also offering a dual credit class through Culver Stockton College called Foundations of Education. McNabb says she is excited to teach this new class. This class is going to introduce students to the history of education and the legal issues within the career. McNabb’s main goal is to increase the number of Knox County students interested in the education field. She believes this class is an excellent choice for anyone interested in education because they would be getting at least one initial class out of the way while they are still in high school. This is the only new class that is dual credit, and the school is covering the tuition costs of the class. Knox County High School felt that it was important to give their students a wider variety of options for their schedules because career options are ever-changing. With the added classes, students have the chance to explore different paths to see if they are interested in certain fields such as education, app development, plant science, and hospitality.

Knox County Football Looks Forward to a Great Season By: Jaiden Linebaugh The Knox County 2019 Football Season has begun. Going into this season, Head Varsity Coach Bruce Vannoy couldn’t wait to get things started. “It’s exciting, just like every year,” said Vannoy. “It’s the start of a new year with a new team.” The football program has eight returning starters for both its offensive and defensive ends of the ball, which will be valuable to them this season. Even with only having 24 athletes, Knox is looking forward to having a successful season this year. The Eagles kicked off the season with a home opener on Saturday, August 31, against Schuyler County Rams. In the first half, junior quarterback Conner Hayes threw to senior receiver Trent Klocke for two touchdowns. Following Hayes ran the ball 83 yards into the endzone to finish the half with a score of 24-0. On defense, the Eagles were strong and hard to get through with senior lineman Bradey Walton and senior linebacker Robert Mauck behind him. The Eagles shut down the Rams 40-0, advancing them to 1-0 on the season. On Friday, September 6, the Eagles traveled to Marceline for their second game of the season. The Eagles came out with a rough start with the Tigers up 28-0 with one minute left in the first half. After halftime, the Eagles began to gain some rhythm and Hayes ran the ball in for a touchdown and 2-point conversion. Later in the second half, Hayes hit sophomore receiver Branson Miller, for a 43-yard touchdown pass. The Eagles struggled to get anything else going for them and fell to the Tigers, 50-16, making them 1-1 on the season. The Eagles’ next game is at home on September 13 against the Westran Hornets. Kick-off begins at 7 p.m.
#HitBombs Tradition Continues By: Robert Mauck Following a strong 3rd place finish at state, the Knox County Lady Eagles are ready to focus on a new year. The team’s current record is 4-3 with big wins over North Shelby, Marion County, Paris, and South Shelby. Head coach Zach Short says his goals always remain the same no matter what sport he is coaching. These goals include doing their best to win a conference and district championship, as well as seeing improvement throughout the season. Short also shared what the new assistant coach, Lauren Dale, brings to the team; he says she has an intensity and great knowledge for pitching techniques. Coach Dale is able to put her focus on pitching so he can focus on fielding and other areas that need improvement. Dale is a Knox alumnus who was also a decorated athlete at the collegiate level. She played four years at Truman State University which brings her lots of experience for her new role. When asked how he plans to overcome the loss of his seven seniors from the 2018 squad, Coach Short, says that he doesn’t see the loss as something he has to overcome, but instead, he just sees it as a new season with different players and different areas to focus on. Junior, Riley Strange also believes that the team is, while different, going to be a powerful team. She says, “ Some people might not think that we will have a good season because we lost so many players, but I have faith in the team.” Short states that he still has some strong players from last year's team to build this year's team from. He says he is looking forward to the little successes of this season and with these small successes, he hopes to build a winning team as the season goes on.
